Ranch style homes are commonly seen in North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, and its state of origin, California. The exterior consists of a low-pitched roof with large windows. Maintenance of the exterior is subjectively easy to maintain. It is customary for this type of home to have a single story. The floorplan is commonly known for its rectangular shape, although some designs differ. This home grows with the family. As additions are made, the house takes shape from its usual rectangle shape into and “L” or “U”. The interior has an open floor concept, making it ideal for entertaining guests and creating a “bigger space” effect. There is little to no separation of living room, to kitchen, to dining room.

Ranch style homes were heavily developed in the 1930’s by Cliff May. Although unlicensed at the time, May was considered a notable architect who designed commercial buildings, custom homes, and tract homes that can be seen all around Southern California. Among his designs, the California Ranch House, was a creation that was influenced by his Spanish Colonial childhood home. The popularity of this style grew in the 1940’s and 1950’s, after World War II. Many soldiers were moving their families into suburban areas and the Ranch style home was a perfect accommodation for growing families. Aside from the notable characteristics, these homes were affordable and able to be built quickly.

Recently, the popularity of the Ranch style has grown, beginning in 2018. Trends show that the new generation of first-time homeowners are looking for smaller, single-floor homes with an open floor plan.
