Designs travel far and wide and change with every culture they pass through. The Victorian home originated in Great Britain through the years of Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 through 1901. Its unique model reached the U.S. towards the end of the Industrial Revolution, around 1840. The abundance of new materials and technological advances inspired house developers to mass produce multiple designs of the Victorian home. Some of the popular designs in the U.S. include the Italianate Style and the Queen Anne Style.

Italianate Style

The Italianate Victorian was most popular in the beginning of the Victorian Era. The homes had pointed, low roofs with many embellishments on the exterior. It has a high resemblance to an Italian Renaissance villa with the ornamental brackets and wide eaves.

Queen Anne Style

Following the Italianate Style was the Queen Anne style. Its popularity lasted from the 1880’s through the 1900’s. Compared to the Italianate style, this style is more ornate with steeper roofs, circular towers, and multiple wall textures. The Queen Anne style is most recognized today and resembles the modern-day Victorian design.

The Victorian home holds a historical significance and comes from an era of transformational development. Today, this design is more of a sight to see than a desired home to live in. With popular homes such as The Painted Ladies in San Francisco, California and the Vaile Mansion in Independence, Missouri, this design is a major piece of architectural progress.
