The Mid-Century Modern (MCM) movement inspired graphic, product, architectural, and interior design between the 1930’s and the 1970’s. Its popularity has grown in present day with more people designing with a more minimalistic touch. This style is a balance between simplicity and uniqueness.
From an exterior view, MCM homes have flat roofs with triangular accents. The roof above the front door or garage might look like a 90-degree angled triangle. The design is noticed by its asymmetrical plans and geometric forms. It was important to bring nature into the home, so this design includes numerous floor-to-ceiling windows and sky lights. The design also permits courtyards.
Entering a Mid-Century Modern home, you will see an open concept floorplan. This style is considered minimalistic with little to no ornamentation. The emphasis on nature brings in natural light, creating an open effect that makes the space feel bigger. Rooms are separated by changes of elevation, partial walls, or partitions created by cabinets.
Although popular, a MCM home tends to be high maintenance. The flat roofs cause more debris to build up. This can cause roof leaks if not regularly cleaned. Having a lot of large windows can make it difficult to keep them clear for long periods of time. Traditional MCM designs encouraged keeping the different materials, such as aluminum and wood, to be exposed. These materials would have to be regularly maintained. Because these materials are widely available, restorations are less expensive.
Today, more Mid-Century Modern homes are being restored or newly built. Its popularity continues to grow.
